As the news of spreading violence after Bhima-Koregaon battle anniversary continues, one name gets mentioned a lot — Dr.Sambhaji Bhide.

For simplicity, let’s boil down all the articles on net to these two classes

  1. The article suspects Sambhaji Bhide
Source: Mumbai Mirror

2. The article defends Dr. Sambhaji Bhide

Dr. Sambhaji Bhide’s Defense

The Logical Dissection:

The Blame:

Let’s look at the information available:

  1. The blame is based on an FIR filed against Dr.Sambhaji. The details of which are not available.
  2. What is available in the article is the prior record of Dr. Sambhaji — 12 cases including rioting, trespassing, criminal intimidation, etc.,

What can it mean:
a) Filing of FIR doesn’t mean the person is guilty. Anybody can file an FIR against anyone.
b) Having a past criminal record doesn’t mean the person is guilty either. E.g: A former goon turned into football coach, Akhilesh Paul
c) However, it does show that Dr. Sambhaji Bhide is resourceful enough to execute it. Still it doesn’t mean he’s guilty.

The Defense

Let’s look at the information available:

  1. Educational Qualifications and Social Work Experience of Dr. Sambhaji Bhide.

What can it mean:

a) Having high educational qualifications doesn’t mean a person can’t promote violence. E.g: Jinnah did on Direct Action Day or Joseph Mengele

b) Doing Social Work also doesn’t mean a person can’t commit crimes. E.g: Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan

So both the arguments don’t really count to much, nothing can be said with certainty.

IF BOTH ARTICLES DON’T HELP, WHAT DOES?

The onlys thing that should shape your opinion of someone are the things relevant to the incident —
1. Where was Dr. Sambhaji during incident? What was he doing in weeks prior to that? What was he doing afterwards?
2. Has any of the perpetrators led it to him?
3. Dr. Sambhaji’s alibis? etc.,

Basically, it depends on competent police work. Until then, keep your minds open. Listen to sound arguments from everyone, be respectful to people on both the sides of the argument even if you feel they are wrong, most probably they’re thinking the same about you. Remember, both of you want the same thing — Peace. Resolution of the issue is, mostly, in everyone’s interest.
